Camps Bay is undoubtedly on of South Africa’s top tourist destinations. The Stretches of White Sand and Blue Water, reminiscent of the Mediterranean, have visitors flocking to the beach throughout summer. Camp’s Bay is one of 18 Blue Flag beaches in South Africa and the most popular beach around the Cape Town City Centre.
An Affluent suburb in the Cape Town area, Camp’s Bay is nestled against the impressive back drop of the 12 Apostles mountain range and just over the hill that’s the divide between Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. Only 15 minutes from the CBD, Camps Bay is within an hour’s drive of all the Major attractions Cape Town has to offer.
The promenade, lined with Palm Trees is always buzzing with people going to and from the beach. Here you can also find African crafts for sale on the street. Across the road however, you’ll find some of Cape Town’s most exclusive hangouts. Restaurants, bars and lounges, you’ll be spoilt for choice as most culinary styles and tastes are represented in the vicinity.
The Lawn you walk across towards the beach is a popular picnic spot, as well as the beach and is usually packed with visitors lounging in the sun. There is a Supermarket in the Centre across the road if you forgot to pack in sun block, sandwiches, cool drinks or even ice cream. There are also kiosks on the beach that sell snacks and ice creams. On the beach umbrellas are for hire and so are deck chairs, recommended only if you’re not visiting the beach again.
The beach of Camps Bay is idyllic in its aesthetic and is referred to as South Africa’s “St. Tropez” as local and International celebrities spend their time on the strip. Next to Camps Bay is Clifton witch is just as popular. Clifton is divided in 4 beaches and the last one also has a blue flag status. Clifton has good sheltering from the rocks for when the infamous South Easter, or Cape Doctor as it’s locally known, is blowing.
The reason why most people go to the beach is to sunbathe, swim or surf. Camps Bay caters for al these activities on par with the famous beaches of the world. For the lively the bars are top class and although pricey a lot more sophisticated than Long Street. On your travels to Cape Town you’ll definitely pay a visit to the most popular beach in the Cape Peninsula, it’s where everyone seems to be going in the summer.
