Springs is a city on the East Rand in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It is part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and lies 50 km east of Johannesburg. Its name is derived from the large number of natural springs in the area. Springs sprung up in 1904 and owes its origins to the discovery of coal and gold in the region. It has developed from a pioneering mining town into a prosperous industrial giant. Just outside of Springs is the Blesbokspruit Wetland Reserve. Blesbokspruit is Gauteng's major wetland system, running through Kempton Park, Boksburg, Benoni, Brakpan, Springs and Nigel and on to Heidelberg where it flows into the Suikerbosrand River and the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve one of South Africa's most densely populated areas with a large variety of plant and animal species and vegetation types range from open grassland on hillsides. From O.R. Tambo International Airport, take the R21 ramp to Boksburg and continue on R21 past East Rand Mall on left side, Road becomes Rietfontein Rd. at intersection, where Something Fishy Restaurant is diagonally across from you. Turn right onto Rondebult Road and keep straight for 6.6 Km until board shows off ramp onto N17 to Springs. Continue onto N17 Highway and proceed through Dalpark Plaza toll gate and proceed until Wit Rd. R51 and take off ramp. At the top of the off ramp turn left. Proceed on Wit Rd. And go over four traffic lights and turn right into Rhokana at the fifth traffic light, take slip way left onto Nigel Rd.
