Put together by the City Council, De Beers and the Rotary club as the Kimberley Youth hostel ? now known as Gum Tree Lodge was opened by Mr Harry Oppenheimer on 24 May 1982. Our complex of buildings was constructed more than a century ago, as a convict station, now transformed by the City Architect into accommodation for visitors to the Diamond Fields. We are situated on the Eastern Boundary of the city, in extensive grounds, planted with a variety of trees, including giant bluegums, from which our name is derived. We have permanent and semi-permanent tenants and 150 beds for overnight visitors with an adjoining Old Diggers Licensed Restaurant.
