AREA INFORMATION
WELCOME TO THE NAMIB DESERT. The Namib Desert – unique – with a variety of desert landscapes, gives Namibia its essential character. The Namib Desert – the oldest on earth – is a living desert! Flora and fauna are perfectly adapted to this harsh environment. The Namib Desert – hosts some of the highest accessible dunes in the world – the dunes at Sossusvlei, attracting more visitors every year. The Namib Naukluft Park – is the largest Nature Reserve in Namibia and many private nature reserves are nestled at its borders to form a unity for wildlife and people alike. Namib Naukluft Lodge is located on a unique 25,000 ha Private Nature Reserve which stretches from the Namib Desert to the Naukluft Mountains, bordering to the Namib Naukluft Park on both sides, East and West. Since 1993 this unique and peaceful place has been carefully developed by its nature loving owners Friedolf and Barbara Sturm. Special consideration for its sensible ecosystem has enabled this Private Nature Reserve to grow to its full potential over the years. Thus it is giving the most of a great desert experience for the relaxed holidaymaker and the enthusiastic desert explorer. A large number of animals roam freely and undisturbed over the wide open plains of this 25,000 ha nature reserve. The reserve hosts a variety of game like the oryx antelope, kudu, springbok, steenbok, klipspringer, mountain zebra, ostrich and baboon. During the evenings, the bat-eared fox, the ‘Aardwolf’ and a giant eagle owl are common visitors. Sometimes a spotted or brown hyena may be seen. On a few occasions, predators like the African wildcat, leopard and cheetah have been spotted walking majestically over the vast grassland. A bird-hide in easy walking distance from the lodge invites the keen ornithologist for birding activities. Especially in the early morning hours flocks of Namaqua sand grouses gather around the waterhole. Two black-breasted snake eagles often watch their prey whilst sitting on top of the granite rocks. The Ludwig’s and the Ruppel’s bustard are common visitors. This Private Nature Reserve would not be complete without reptiles. Snakes and scorpions are hardly ever seen, but the barking gecko is one, that should be noted. Its clicking sound during the evening hours is a concert never to be forgotten. The beautiful desert night sky, so clear, that you can easily spot the Milky Way and the Southern Cross. Take your time and wait for the perfect shooting star! We love the Namib Desert - let us show you why!
