Tofo Beach Accommodation Description
Tofo Beach Accommodation offers 3 self-catering cottages, basic and rustic-styled accommodation. Casa Derika, a 2 bedroom beach front cottages sleeps max 5 and is on the main beach in Tofo. Casa Isabel, a 2 bedroom sea front cottages, sleep max 6 and is in Tofinho. Casa Christine, a 2 bedroom with loft sea front cottages, sleep max 7 and is also in Tofinho. Tofo is aa awesome beach town in the Inhambane province some 550 km north of Maputo and is reachable with a normal sedan car. The cottages are equipped to cater for typical South African families, ranging in size between 5 and 7 persons. The cottages offer the basic facilities, as would be expected when going self-catering, e.g. cutlery, crockery, bedding and furnishing … nothing extravagant … just typical South African home-like where you can wear shorts, go bear feet and have supper when you feel like it. Unfortunately, no TV and aircon. The 3 cottages share a group of 2 cleaners who’s job it is to make your stay as memorable as possible, e.g. makes the beds, does the dishes, sweeps the floors, assists you in negotiating the best buy of fresh fish, prawns, calamari and crayfish from the beach and also cleans the fish. His salary is included in your daily fee. The only task they are not allowed to do is washing and ironing of clothes, for which they can assist in finding you someone who could do that at a modest fee. The cottages are also serviced by a group of guards, whose job it is to keep a watchful eye during night-time and to ensure that your privacy is not compromised. Guards are normally on duty between 22:00 and 06:00
AREA INFORMATION
About 2 000 years ago, the expansion of the Sahara desert lead to a mass migration of people southward, assimilating scattered groups of San hunter-gatherers on the way. The Karanga, or Shona, became the dominant group in the region and were trading with Arab dhows as early as the 10th century. The Arabs brought beads, salt, cloth, ceramics etc. in exchange for gold and particularly ivory. The Arabs increased their influence until the arrival of Vasco da Gama who, in his quest for supply points for Portuguese vessels en route to India, anchored his four ships off Inhambane Bay in 1498. His men made landfall during inclement weather and approached a settlement where the locals told them in the Bitonga dialect to come in out of the rain: “Bela khu Nyumbani” The Portuguese incorrectly thought they were being told the name of the region, and so Inhambane got its present name. About 17 km east of Inhambane is where Bar Babalaza marks the crossroads to Tofo and Barra. Tofo is a small beach town, with a hotel and other accomodation, a lovely open beach, nice reefs for fishing and snorkling, spazas, beach bars and dive schools, where you can slow down your pace of life, do nothing, relax and just leave your footprints. Tofo has been popular with Zimbabweans and South Africans since before the war and Tofo has now also become a firm favourite on the international backpacking trail and offers a variety of accommodation and places to eat and drink. Tofinho, less than a kilometre south, is situated on a more exposed and rocky headland and the waves at Tofinho are known for very good surfing. The headland is also a favourite spot for fishermen when a high tide covers the shelf, allowing casting for the plentiful kingfish into the deep waters beyond.
Tofo Beach Accommodation Directions
From Maputo, follow the signs to Xai Xai (EN1). We recommend that you fill up your vehicle at Xai Xai and continue north. At Lindela the road splits, turn right on the Inhambane road. Drive through the city of Inhambane and follow the signboards to Tofo. Continue with this road for approximately 15 minutes (potholed) until you reach Bar Babalaza on your right hand side. Turn to the right to Tofo. About 6 Kms, just before entering Tofo, at the TOFO BEACH ACCOMMODATION/COTTAGES signboard, turn to the right and continue for some 1,5 km on the dirt road, following the signboards up to casa Christine, where our Reception is located. The keys will be there. There are no street names in Tofo and Tofino
